THE TOP TEN LIST

 Best Management Practice Implementation Problems
2
NUMBER 10
  • LOGGING VIEWSHEDS AND THE URBAN INTERFACE

  • While FPA does not “regulate ugly” logging operations are often the first impression the general public gets from forest industry. “Unsightly harvests” may cause more rules and regulations to be implemented.
  • Do a good, clean job around town

6
NUMBER 9
  • NOT CROSS-DITCHING SKID TRAILS  IMMEDIATELY AFTER USE

  • Trails are often left open for long periods of time thus increasing the potential for erosion.

  • To minimize erosion install cross-ditches immediately.
7

8

9
NUMBER 8
  • POORLY INSTALLED CULVERTS

  • This includes improperly sized culverts and poor culvert compaction.
  • Quite often culvert diameters are correct for the 50 year flow but they are too short.  This results in vertical fill slopes and sloughing of material into creeks.
  • Remember to get your Stream Alteration Permit and to allow for fish passage in streams!
10

11

12
NUMBER 7
  • POORLY CONSTRUCTED ROADS

  • This includes excessively steep grades, vertical cut slopes, un-compacted and/or perched fills,  and not using full bench construction on 60%+ slopes.

  • Understand your soil type and slope relationships

16
NUMBER 6

  • SOIL PROTECTION

  • Not using the proper logging method and type of equipment adapted to the given slope, landscape and soil properties
  • With the advent of feller-bunchers  ground based skidding has occurred on slopes that were previously line skid.
  • The results are steeper skid trails with higher potential for erosion and/or land taken out of production.
17

18

19
NUMBER 5
  • LEGACY ROADS IN STREAM PROTECTION ZONES

  • Older roads in SPZ’s are often utilized. Make an investment where re-use is a better option than building new road.

  • Construction of quality rolling dips, surfacing, and proper culvert installation protects roads.

21

22

23
NUMBER 4
  •  POOR QUALITY RESIDUAL STOCKING

  • Many harvest operations remove all merchantable trees and retain small suppressed trees of poor form and vigor.
  • When stands have a high percentage of unacceptable trees, consider stand replacement rather than intermediate cuttings.
  • This is our future!
24

25

26
NUMBER 3
  • LACK OF ADEQUATE ROAD MAINTENANCE

  • This includes surface grading, maintenance of drainage features, and culvert cleanout on active or inactive forest practice operations.

NUMBER 2
  • HAULING AND SKIDDING DURING
  • WET CONDITIONS

  • “Pushing” the operating season to get those last few loads into the mill..  Significant erosion can occur in just a few days!

37
AND THE NUMBER ONE BMP IMPLEMENTATION PROBLEM!

  • WINTER SEASON LOGGING RULES

  • NOT HAVING ADEQUATE SURFACE AND CROSS DRAINAGE INSTALLED PRIOR TO WINTER OPERATIONS!
38
"Often jobs start when the..."
  • Often jobs start when the ground is frozen. This makes it difficult or impossible to install erosion control in roads.
  • Rolling dips and cross-ditches constructed on wet roads are maintenance nightmares. Dips and ditches rarely function properly.

  • A GENERAL RULE OF THUMB:  Provide proper drainage on roads by October 15 for any operations that will start or stop past this date.

"PROBLEMS SUCH AS THESE"
  • PROBLEMS SUCH AS THESE  GENERALLY DO NOT SHOW UP ON THE INDUSTRIAL TIMBERLANDS

  •  BUT …

  • THIS IS WHERE YOUR GATE WOOD IS COMING FROM!
